Fluorosis

Fluorosis in its severe form ( Skeletal Fluorosis ) is a crippling disorder that occurs due to excess in take of fluoride, mainly through drinking water. The effect being permanent and irreversible in nature , are detrimental  to the health of individual and community.

As per BIS( Bureau of Indian Standards ) and WHO ( World Health Organization ) suggested level of fluoride is from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L (milligrams per litre), depending on climate. The goal of water fluoridation is to prevent a chronic disease. Researchers discovered that moderate fluoridation prevents tooth decay.

There is no treatment for cases of skeletal fluorosis, only efforts can be made towards reducing the disability which has occurred. The other form of Fluorosis is Dental Fluorosis.

The best and only possible way to prevent fluorosis is providing safe drinking water to the people. Other source of fluoride is toothpaste, mouthwash, gel, varnish and milk.
